One of the first hobbies I ever had was drawing cars. The earliest thing I remember wanting to be when I grew up was a car designer. I loved sketching and drawing side profiles of imaginary vehicles. In grade 7, we had an art project of any style that we wanted. I chose a hyperrealistic pencil drawing of a Mustang, which introduced me to an entirely new passion.
Each drawing starts from a photograph I want to recreate. I crop the reference photo to be the same aspect ratio as the paper, convert it to greyscale, and overlay a grid. The first thing I draw on the paper is an extremely light matching grid, and then I use the grid to help me proportionally outline the car’s features in a light pencil. Once that’s done, I don’t really have a strategy except to work from left to right to avoid smudging. Each drawing takes 30-40 hours.
